Glancing at my husband, I caught his gaze. “Now what?” I ventured. His look reflected my uncertainty.
After a week in the neonatal intensive care unit, we brought our firstborn home. Faced with the reality of being responsible for this new little life, we felt inadequate and alone.
It wasn’t the first time I struggled with insecurity, nor was it the last. My story has not gone the way I expected it to. I feel ill-equipped to parent my daughter who has intellectual disabilities. I feel insufficient for this writing and speaking vocation to which God has called me.
My feelings reflect the truth: I am inadequate for those tasks. But the Lord isn’t. He possesses perfect understanding and power. Nothing looms too big, complicated, or hard for Him.
Sometimes, though, we can’t sense the Lord’s presence. We don’t always see evidence of His hand in our lives. Yet, whether facing parenting, relationship, financial, or work challenges, we can trust the Lord to be present and working because “far above all finite comprehension is the unchanging faithfulness of God” (Arthur W. Pink).
The book of Numbers puts it this way: “God is not a man, that he might lie, or a son of man, that he might change his mind. Does he speak and not act, or promise and not fulfill? (23:19, CSB)
The Lord has promised He will be with us and help us. His character ensures He will fulfill those promises and every other promise He makes.
We can never fully comprehend all of who God is, but as we grow in our understanding of His character, our confidence in Him will grow as well. When we know the Lord more intimately, we’ll trust Him more deeply.
God’s attributes give us reason to believe He will always be there for us. These five are especially encouraging in times of uncertainty:
- God’s self-sufficiency means we can breathe a bit easier. He doesn’t need us to accomplish His will. It’s not up to us; His plan will be fulfilled no matter how well we perform. God does have a place for us in that plan, but having all He needs in Himself, He will be the enough for us in our inadequacy.
- In God’s wisdom, He doesn’t always answer our prayers the way we want Him to at the time, but He always answers with what’s best for us. The Lord is always doing the wisest thing in our lives. So, His “no” or “not this” are exactly what we need (although not always want we want).
- In the Lord’s attentiveness, He not only delights in us, His children, but He is ever aware of all our needs and desires. God won’t be sleeping, absent, or tuned in elsewhere when we have a need. He is flawlessly attentive and will always respond in a like manner.
- Being spirit, our God cannot be perceived by our human senses unless He chooses to reveal Himself in that way. Instead, He “speaks” to us in our spirits. Therefore, we can be assured that wherever we go, God abides with us still.
- God is steadfast, so even when our circumstances overwhelm us and blind us to His loyalty and trustworthiness and we turn to things other than Him for our security, He will stay faithful and true. Despite our infidelity, the Lord remains completely and utterly dependable . . . for eternity.
God’s very nature ensures we can trust Him to fulfill the promises He makes. He will shepherd us through life. We can step out in faith, knowing the Lord will be there for us, even during those times we feel overwhelmed and alone.
Remind me, dear Lord, of Your consistent and active presence in my life. Help me remember that You never fail, never forget, and never fall short. Assure me once again that what You say I can trust
Question: Which of God’s attributes most comforts and/or encourages you?
