Joel Armstrong is content editor and product developer for Our Daily Bread Publishing. He came to publishing with a background in education, teaching college-level writing while in a PhD program studying English literature. He enjoys developmental editing, when he gets to come alongside authors in the early stages to help shape their manuscripts, but he also knows the satisfaction of a well-placed comma. Joel lives in West Michigan with his wife (a birth photographer) and their two daughters. He likes spending time in their garden, cooking, hiking, and getting to the beaches of Lake Michigan as often as possible.

Always get a second pair of eyes on your writing. It’s an excellent rule of thumb, but how do you edit your own work to make it the best you can before sharing it with others? Joel Armstrong is an in-house editor who also writes (and edits) his own fiction. In this session, learn how to see your writing with fresh eyes, evaluate your structure and approach with your readers’ needs in mind, and “kill your darlings” when your pet anecdotes, talking points, or weasel words are getting in the way of clear, concise writing.
